Can I use a RS-232 DB-9 USB Adapter to conect & verbs files between an prehistoric and unknown PC?

I want to verbs files from an old computer to an XP computer using the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard. They say-so to use a null modem cable, but my new computer doesn't enjoy a com port. Would conencting the computers via a serial to usb adapter work?
