Can I use the dvd rom cable to run my complicated drive?

CHECK YOUR USERS MANUAL and the BIOS.

IF it can use an IDE drive and your cable has 3 connectors (1 to MB, 1 to DVD, 1 to IDE HD) consequently yes. You can buy a new cable beside 3 connectors if yours only have 2.

SOME newer systems do NOT allow IDE drives, in which skin they use SATA drives ONLY. If that is the valise then NO you can NOT use the cable to connect your IDE drive, as the system can not authorize the drive as a valid connection.
Yes, it's call an IDE cable... or Serial ATA cable... if it's big, it's IDE, if it's small and red it's Serial ATA
