Bootable thumb drive to update bios?

Check the boot device priority in the BIOS. If within is an option for removable media you'll obligation to make sure that's first and consequently have the drive connected when you reboot. Otherwise, the company that wrote the BIOS (i.e Pheonix) may hold their own updater, you can run from Windows. My Sony VAIO laptop had an update on their support site, call WinPhlash, that did it all for me.
Check Google: in that are tons of websites around telling you what you requirement and how to use the various programs. A perfect start seems to be http://www.bootdisk.info
